What is sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)?

Abrupt loss of heart function caused by an electrical malfunction. This causes the heart to stop beating properly & prevents blood flow to the brain & other organs. It is a medical emergency that can lead to death within minutes if not treated with immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) & defibrillation.

The Inaugural HRTHUDL Cup at Solina Golf Club presented by Safe Life on November 6th will be a competitive golf experience with life saving impact. Proceeds will equip Columbia Police Department vehicles with automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

We're closing the gap between cardiac emergencies and life-saving response. That means putting AEDs where people gather — athletic fields, schools, parks, recreation areas, and police vehicles. It means training everyday people in hands-only CPR so it becomes second nature. And it means pushing for policy, like the Smart Heart Act, that protects student athletes and communities long after we leave the room.

What is automated external defibrillator (aed)?

    • AEDs work by delivering an electrical shock to the heart to restore a normal heart rhythm in the case of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

    • using sensors/electrodes in the pads attached to the chest, AEDs analyze heart rhythms & determine if a shock is needed.

    • AEDs guide users through pad placement and delivering the shock with clear voice & visual prompts.

    • AEDs are designed for ease of use—even by children. South Carolina has the Good Samaritan law protecting bystanders who act in good faith during an emergency.

    • press down at least 2 inches on the center of the chest at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

    • for infants, the compression depth is about 1.5 inches.

    • for every minute that passes without CPR & defibrillation, the chance of survival from SCA decreases by 10 %.

    • awareness of AED locations is essential for effective response.

    • look for universal AED signs (heart with a lightning bolt) in public places & on the doors of buildings.

    • assess the person for responsiveness & a pulse.

    • if no pulse is found, call 911, start CPR, & get the nearest AED.

    • turn AED on & follow the prompts.
